Basics of Skiing/Snowboarding Gear:
Powderpigs lessons do not include ski or snowboard gear rentals or any winter clothing, so make sure you visit one of our partner shops!
All ski students need skis with bindings and boots. Poles are not needed for beginners and instructors will let you know when/if your student is ready.
Snowboard students need a snowboard with bindings and boots.

All equipment should be inspected and tuned by a shop each year prior to the season starting. We often see issues with improperly set up gear the first week of lessons. Make sure you get a qualified ski technician to check your gear sizing, bindings, and bases! We cannot fix these at the pigpen, so you will miss out on valuable lesson time if it has to be taken care of during lessons.
You will also want to check and make sure that you have all the clothing you need for this outdoor activity (and that it still fits!!) Wool is the best material for winter sports, as it wicks away sweat, keeps you dry when wet, keeps you cooler when hot and has natural antimicrobial properties (read, less stinky socks!)
NO COTTON anywhere on your body while skiing. It absorbs moisture and will make you cold!
Check your ski pants and mittens! Get quality brands with good water repellant tech. We get VERY wet snow here in the Pacific Northwest, and a rainy ski day is not uncommon. Dry kids are happy kids and happy kids learn better! Gore Tex is the industry standard. You can also refresh your waterproofing for your gear with Nikwax brand Tech Wash and Wash in TX Direct Waterproofing. Available at most ski shops, REI and Amazon.
A well fitting helmet is also a necessity for safe skiing. A shop can help you make sure your helmet fits appropriately.
